The Citrus Tree (Citrus)
Citrus trees originally come from China and India, where they were planted as fruit trees long ago.
The Citrus tree can withstand up to a maximum of -3 degrees Celsius frost, making it suitable only as a container plant. For overwintering, the tree can be kept indoors in a cool room, but it must receive adequate light.
In spring, the Citrus tree blooms with cream-white clusters of flowers that have a delightful fragrance. From summer to March, the fruits ripen. However, be aware that in our country, the fruits will taste very bitter. Pruning the Citrus tree is done mainly for shaping purposes, not to increase fruit yield.
The Citrus tree prefers full sun and should especially be kept out of the wind. If the tree is placed in a draft, it will be more susceptible to pests and diseases such as aphids, leaf miners and fruit flies. When planting a Citrus tree, moderately acidic soil should be used. If the soil is too rich in lime, the leaves will turn light green, and the tree will not grow optimally.
The varieties sold by the Olive Tree Specialist include: Citrus sinensis (the orange tree), Citrus limon (the lemon tree), Citrus latifolia (the lime tree), and Citrus reticulata (the mandarin tree).
In short: the Citrus tree is a wonderful addition to your garden with its wonderfully fragrant flowers, evergreen leaves, and brightly colored fruits.
