The European Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis)
The European fan palm (Chamaerops humilis) is a palm species that naturally occurs in the Mediterranean region. It is one of the few palm species that is well suited to the Western European climate and is widely used as an ornamental palm in gardens and on terraces.
Chamaerops humilis has a compact, often multi-stemmed growth habit with stiff, fan-shaped leaves. The foliage is green to grey-green in colour and gives the palm a robust, Mediterranean appearance.
Thanks to its evergreen foliage, the European fan palm provides structure and atmosphere throughout the entire year. This makes it ideal as a solitary feature in the garden, as an eye-catching plant in a border, or as a palm in a large planter.
The European fan palm is relatively winter-hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to approximately -12°C in a sheltered location. During severe frost, protection is recommended, especially for young plants or specimens in containers.
In short: a strong palm that naturally adds a Mediterranean and exotic atmosphere to gardens and terraces.
