The Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum)
The Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) is a deciduous shrub or small tree. There are hundreds of varieties available, with large or small, deeply lobed, red or green leaves. The growth forms also vary, from upright to weeping.
The Japanese Maple prefers a spot in partial shade and in a lightly acidic, well-draining soil. It is a slow-growing shrub or tree and can tolerate pruning well.
The green-leaved varieties change most dramatically in the autumn, turning from bright yellow to vivid red. Most varieties are fairly winter-hardy.
In short: a beautiful solitary tree with stunning autumn color!
