The Fig tree (Ficus carica)
The fig tree (Ficus carica) is native in the Mediterranean but also thrives very well in our climate.
The fig is particularly decorative due to its white/gray bark and its large, deep green, hand-shaped leaves. Let's clear up a misunderstanding: the fig is not a fruit; it is actually a fleshy inflorescence. The fig only ripens after two years and resembles the shape of an urn. The fig is a delicious delicacy and most varieties ripen from September to October.
When planting the Ficus carica, it is best done in full sun or partial shade. Pruning the fig tree can be done in two stages: in summer to stimulate (pseudo)fruit growth and in spring mainly for shaping. If the Ficus carica is not pruned, the tree can grow up to 4 meters high and 6 meters wide. Additionally, a fig tree can be guided very well as an espalier just like apples and pears.
In short: a highly decorative tree that is suitable for various applications.
