Care instructions for the Cork Oak tree
Quercus suber
Watering: When the cork oak tree is planted with Mediterranean substrate, it requires a lot of water once a week during the growing season (March to October). In summer, during dry and hot weather, this can be increased to twice a week. In autumn, watering depends on the weather conditions. If it rains a lot, the cork oak tree does not need water. If it is dry for a long period, water can be given a few more times in autumn. It is difficult to specify the exact amount of water needed because cork oak trees can be in different conditions and sizes. It is recommended to regularly check the root ball to ensure it is moist. You can do this by removing a few centimeters of Mediterranean substrate around the root ball. If the soil is too dry, increase the watering. If the cork oak tree does not receive enough water, the leaves will become dull in color, droop and curl. Note that a cork oak tree planted in a planter requires more water than one planted in the ground.
Fertilizing: The special Mediterranean soil from the Olive Tree Specialist contains sufficient nutrients for about 7 months (one growing season). In subsequent years, you can feed the cork oak tree with special Osmocote for Mediterranean trees. These fertilizer granules are available at the Olive Tree Specialist. For dosage instructions, please refer to the packaging.
Pruning: Cork oaks are available in many different shapes. Pruning the cork oak is very simple and can be done with an electric hedge trimmer. The crown can be shortened as desired, and it will regrow from there. For the cork oak, pruning encourages growth.
Repotting: If your cork oak is in a pot or container, it will need to be repotted after 8 to 10 years. You can use the same pot or planter. Remove the cork oak tree from the pot, trim about 10 cm from the root ball, and replant the cork oak tree using clay pebbles and Mediterranean substrate.
