Care instructions for the Fig tree
Ficus carica
Watering: When the fig tree is planted with clay pebbles and Mediterranean substrate, it requires a lot of water once a week during the growing season (March to October). In summer, during dry and hot weather, this can be increased to twice a week. In autumn, watering depends on the weather conditions. If it rains a lot, the fig tree does not need water. If it is dry for a long period, water can be given a few more times in autumn. It is difficult to specify the exact amount of water needed because fig trees can be in different conditions and sizes. It is recommended to regularly check the root ball to ensure it is moist. You can do this by removing a few centimeters of Mediterranean substrate around the root ball. If the soil is too dry, increase the watering. If the fig tree does not receive enough water, its leaves will start to droop immediately. Note that a fig tree planted in a planter requires more water than one planted in the ground.
Fertilizing: The special Mediterranean soil from the Olive Tree Specialist contains sufficient nutrients for about 7 months (one growing season). In subsequent years, you can feed the fig tree with special Osmocote for Mediterranean trees. These fertilizer granules are available at the Olive Tree Specialist. For dosage instructions, please refer to the packaging.
Pruning: Pruning fig trees is very simple. In early spring, prune about 30% of the entire crown of the tree. This will make the tree much fuller in summer. If desired, the fig tree can be lightly pruned for shape during spring and summer.
Repotting: If your fig tree is in a pot or planter, it will need to be repotted after 8 to 10 years. You can use the same pot or planter. Remove the fig tree from the pot, trim 10 cm from around the root ball, and replant it with clay pebbles and Mediterranean substrate.
