Care instructions for the Grapevine tree
Vitis vinifera
Watering: When the grapevine tree is planted with clay pebbles and Mediterranean substrate, it requires a lot of water once a week during the growing season (March to October). In summer, during dry and hot weather, this can be increased to twice a week. In autumn, watering depends on the weather conditions. If it rains a lot, the grapevine tree does not need water. If it is dry for a long period, water can be given a few more times in autumn. It is difficult to specify the exact amount of water needed because grapevine trees can be in different conditions and sizes. It is recommended to regularly check the root ball to ensure it is moist. You can do this by removing a few centimeters of Mediterranean substrate around the root ball. If the soil is too dry, increase the watering. If the grapevine tree does not receive enough water, the leaves will droop and curl. Note that a grapevine tree planted in a planter requires more water than one planted in the ground.
Fertilizing: The special Mediterranean soil from the Olive Tree Specialist contains sufficient nutrients for about 7 months (one growing season). In subsequent years, you can feed the grapevine tree with special Osmocote for Mediterranean trees. These fertilizer granules are available at the Olive Tree Specialist. For dosage instructions, please refer to the packaging.
Pruning: Pruning a grapevine tree is very simple. In autumn, prune all side branches of the main branches back to two buds. This will help maintain a beautiful, compact crown and encourage the harvest. If you have the grapevine tree trained as a espalier or climbing plant, you can prune the entire crown of the tree back by about 30%. This will make the grapevine tree much fuller in summer. If desired, grapevines trees can be lightly shaped during spring and summer.
Repotting: If your grapevine tree is in a pot or planter, it will need to be repotted after 8 to 10 years. You can use the same pot or planter. Remove the grapevine tree from the pot, trim about 10 cm from the root ball, and replant the grapevine tree with clay pebbles and Mediterranean substrate.
